Visiting Assistant Professor of Writing & Rhetoric

St. Edward's University, a nationally ranked, independent Catholic university and Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, nonrenewable position as a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of English, beginning August 18, 2025. The successful candidate will teach courses in the General Education program and in the Writing and Rhetoric degree program; assist the chair of the Department of English in managing the General Education writing program, including mentoring a team of part-time faculty and ensuring their alignment with the program's curriculum; participate in program, departmental, and university service; advise students in the program; and work effectively with colleagues across disciplines.

For consideration, candidates must have the following qualifications:

  • A doctorate or master's degree in Writing and Rhetoric or related field. Doctoral candidates will be considered.
  • At least two or more years of previous successful teaching experience at the collegiate level. ● A strong portfolio of teaching materials and sample syllabi from 2 classes they have taught. ● A teaching philosophy that describes the candidate's approach to the use of generative AI in courses that focus on writing.
  • Successful completion of an employment and/or criminal history background check.

Essential Responsibilities Include: Candidates should have the interest and ability or potential to teach various undergraduate courses and support a diverse student body.

Specific duties include but are not limited to:

  • Teach 3 fall courses and 4 spring courses, including two levels of undergraduate Rhetoric & Composition general-education courses
  • Assist the chair of the Department of English with the management of the General Education writing program.
  • Participate in curriculum development, applying current research on first-year student success and retention.
  • Advise and mentor a diverse body of students.
  • Participate actively in university and department committees, as needed.
  • Assist with assessment and accreditation projects.
  • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Interact effectively and professionally with the general public.
  • Plan, organize, and prioritize tasks.
  • Meet pressing timelines.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned and based on departmental need.
  • Other duties as assigned
