Product Owner

Enterprise Information Systems


St. Edward's University is seeking a Product Owner for Enterprise Resource Planner (ERP) Applications to join the Enterprise Information Systems (EIS) product team. The ERP Applications Product Owner (PO) serves as the primary liaison for ERP product users, collaborating with stakeholders and technical teams to create a compelling shared ERP vision, and prioritizes work to achieve that vision. The ERP PO works closely with other EIS product owners and campus stakeholders to influence strategic decisions and the product roadmap while attending to everyday release and operational tasks. The position is responsible for prioritizing and supporting the work of multiple ERP products in a fast-moving environment and is the central hub for tracking and reporting on development. The ideal candidate provides skill in product research, business analysis, business process improvement, and project management to enable EIS to enhance existing (and deploy new) technologies, processes, and capabilities with agility.


QUALIFICATIONS: Successful candidates must have a Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in higher education and an understanding of higher education business practices preferred. Experience with ERP applications in higher education, including knowledge of add-on software such as document management systems or workflow engines is preferred. Experience supporting Salesforce is a plus. Strong familiarity with a broad range of information technology concepts-especially those concepts associated with identity management, enterprise information technology infrastructure, sophisticated websites, database design and integrity, software development and application integrations. Work experience as a product owner or business analyst on a team using Agile methodologies is strongly preferred. Ability to quickly analyze and comprehend complex, cross-platform business needs and translate them into solutions. Ability to translate between technical and business concepts and solutions. Ability to explain data relationships and impacts to business partners. Ability to see and communicate the big picture to help provide context for detailed requirements and plans. Ability to quickly learn complex new systems and identify areas of risk and dependencies. Ability to manage projects with ambiguity in roles and governance. Open-mindedness, comfort with changing priorities, and excellent problem-solving.


Responsibilities:

The Product Owner has responsibilities that span business analysis, project management, and product owner roles:

Release Planning and Management

  • Schedule cross-functional releases with campus stakeholders and EIS technical teams, mitigating academic calendar and vendor release cycle dependencies.
  • Define the scope of ERP software releases with EIS technical teams and campus stakeholders based on software support status, stakeholder needs, feature enhancements, and institutional prioritization.
  • Lead change management activities such as user acceptance testing, release approvals, communication, and schedule or scope changes.
  • Project manage infrastructure upgrades or other initiatives, as needed.

Product Planning and Development

  • Monitor the strategy and roadmaps vendors offer for software and integrate these into university strategy for products and services.
  • Clearly communicate direction, priorities, product and project status, downtime, and other facets of product status across all stakeholders.
  • Create and manage the ERP product roadmap, backlog and plan deployments to deliver on the roadmap.
  • Facilitate meetings/workshops to create a shared understanding with stakeholders, to engage team members in release and product planning, to gather user feedback and to demonstrate new features.
  • Realize product vision by working with multiple business and technology stakeholders to understand project requirements and their cross-functional impact through interviews, analysis, and research.
  • Document, review and moderate stories for projects while providing a critical eye to the content, presentation and level of detail.
  • Participate in QA and acceptance testing according to groomed user stories, design prototypes, understood business goals, and agreed upon definition of done.
  • Expand product knowledge through various professional development opportunities such as on-demand or scheduled training, product webinars, product and industry conferences.

Support and Maintenance

  • Triage tickets when campus stakeholders report defects or request support/assistance.
  • Troubleshoot reported defects or issues within the ERP primary and ancillary software products and escalate issues to third-party vendors when necessary.
  • Create and manage support documentation such as knowledge base articles, business process diagrams, and user guides.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the processes supported by the university's ERP software applications.

Business Process Improvement

  • Perform complex analysis of business processes, both internal to EIS and for external campus offices highly dependent on ERP software, identifying and suggesting improvements.
  • Assist campus stakeholders in articulating business processes, creating process documentation, and sharing process knowledge with EIS technical teams.
  • Model lean/agile product management processes for campus stakeholders and guide them on documenting business processes, performing quality assurance testing, and writing user stories without PO assistance.
  • Use data where possible to inform decisions at both the product and the organizational levels.

EIS Portfolio & Product Management

  • Work in a collaborative manner with other product owners, stakeholders, and teams for all aspects of the job including backlog management and prioritization.
  • Create epics, stories, and tasks, various types of documentation, and participate in grooming, sizing, and prioritizing the backlog for multiple products/teams.
  • Provide and influence stakeholders through strong leadership skills and provide decision making with business and technical teams.
  • Work collaboratively on continuous improvement and refinement of processes and tools used by the product team to manage/support EIS software.
  • Demonstrate flexibility as business priorities and product assignments change.
  • Perform other duties as required.
