Director of Government and Community Relations



St. Edward's University seeks to hire a Director of Government and Community Relations.  The successful candidate will represent the university's mission, strategic plan and St. Edward's brand to external constituents to increase awareness of and engagement with St. Edward's University. Inspired by Strategic Plan 2022, this new position reports to the Vice President of Marketing and Enrollment and works closely with the President and his Cabinet.  In addition, this role will also work closely with the following individuals and offices; Director of Communications, AVP for Campus Safety, AVP for Campus Master Plan, Marketing and Advancement teams, Career and Professional Services, deans and faculty, and the Office of Community Engagement.


Essential Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop and implement a strategic, measurable external relations strategy and engagement plan for Austin's employers, community organizations, associations, city and state government.
  • Working with the President, monitor legislative developments that may impact university operations. As assigned, represent the university to government officials and other VIPs who engage with the campus.
  • Serve as the primary university liaison to the City of Austin and stay informed about policies and plans that may impact the university, its strategic plan or its master plan.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to all neighborhood and community groups, working in coordination with the AVP for Campus Safety, Director of Communications and agency partners as appropriate.
  • Identify, create and manage partnerships and sponsorships that will advance the goals of the strategic plan.
  • Identify external issues and opportunities and bring them to the university leadership teams.
  • Engage support as needed from community relations counselors and lobbyists outside the university.
  • Occasionally serve as a spokesperson to the media, working closely with the Director of Communications, the primary spokesperson for the university.
  •  Integrate the government and community relations work with other communications and reputation management strategies of the university marketing office.



  • Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Business Administration, Education, Public Affairs, Public Administration, or related area is required. Graduate degree is beneficial.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in a similar role in Austin with an established network of contacts and good relationships.
  • Substantial experience creating, developing, managing and measuring a strategic set of initiatives.
  • Documented, measurable results from recent government and community relations outreach.
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communications skills are necessary.
  • Broad latitude for independent judgement and initiative.
  • Organizational agility and ability to work effectively with a varied group of stakeholders.
  • Evening and weekend work will be required
