Undergraduate Business Student Advising and Retention Specialist

 

Overview

The advising and retention specialist serves as a primary point of contact for The Bill Munday School of Business students during their academic careers. This position focuses on helping students persist through graduation by working with them on academic and financial issues that may be barriers to successful degree completion. Successful advisors demonstrate strong student service skills and are capable of building rapport and trust with a diverse undergraduate population. This position also requires advisors to work closely and collaboratively with faculty advisors. This position will report to the Assistant to the Dean and work in collaboration with the Director for Academic Support Services and the Associate Vice President for Student Academic Support Services (SASS).

 

Responsibilities

  • Advise Munday School of Business students regarding degree completion requirements and University policies.
  • Advise second and third year students regarding university and degree requirements and options
  • Support retention and re-enrollment efforts based on University and MSB policies. Works with Associate Vice President for SASS related to retention initiatives, which includes:
    • Collaborate with SASS on the re-recruitment of students from MSB who have not completed their degrees.
    • Oversee midterm progress reports, early attendance reports and other academic progress reports.
    • Utilize Mapworks software for monitoring student progression, retention, graduation and post-graduation success.
  • Identify student needs and helps students resolve potential academic, financial, and time management issues.
  • Ensure the maintenance of accurate student advising records.
  • Make phone calls to students who have not registered.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff and other University departments to support students and resolve issues on behalf of students.
  • Provide administrative advising support for faculty and other University departments, as needed.
  • Comply with departmental quality standards and metrics.
  • Partner with Academic Counseling and Exploration to connect students to the Bill Munday School of Business.
  • Perform other duties, as needed, to support students and other University departments.

 

Qualifications

  • Hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited university. Master's degree preferred.
  • Has a minimum of 2+ years of work experience in a student-advising role.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and personnel in other offices.
  • Show a working knowledge of higher education ERP systems (e.g., Banner, SIS+), current word processing, spreadsheet, and database software programs.
  • Demonstrate excellent written and telephone customer service skills.
  • Behave in a professional manner and works to create a positive working environment.
  • Show an appreciation for diversity and multi-cultural differences.
  • Value strong time management and prioritization skills.
  • Balance quality and efficiency while managing a heavy advising load.
  • Shows comfort with change in a high-paced work environment.
  • Demonstrates strong problem solving and critical thinking skills, including the use of solid judgment and the ability to professionally manage confidential information.
  • Work independently but also appreciates being a valued team member.
  • Adhere to federal and university-wide compliance standards.
  • Successful completion of a criminal and/or employment background check required.

 

 

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrates:

  • Knowledge of higher education policies and procedures governing undergraduate student admissions, academic progress, financial aid and other student service operations.
  • Expertise using higher education ERP systems (e.g. Banner and Degree Works).
  • Talent aggregating, analyzing and presenting data for decision-making.
  • Basic acumen of elementary statistical analysis and data collection.

 

Salary

Salary is dependent upon qualifications.
