Establishes security measures for doors by evaluating access, locking, and exit requirements. Responsible for installation, repair, and periodic maintenance of locks, door closers, and panic hardware. Performs routine general maintenance on various building systems to include plumbing, electrical, carpentry, masonry, and glass repair.


Key cutting and duplication, adjusting and changing key combinations.

Estimating time and materials required for repair and renovation projects.

Open locks by identifying type of lock, locking system, reading lock codes, drilling, picking, dismantling, or taking impressions.

Uses key software programs for specification writing, bitting development and keying.

Setup cores and cylinders for any type of lockset.(mortise and IC cores)

Diagnose and repair operational problems with locks, replace worn tumblers, pins, springs, and other parts. Exit/Panic device servicing, replacement and installation. Door Closer servicing, replacement and installation.

Maintain inventory of master keys.

Maintain a secure environment by keeping lock, key, and access information confidential, complying with university and legal regulations.

Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and reading locksmithing publications.

Assist other trades as needed and perform related work as assigned.



TX DPS Locksmith Manager Experience and three years of related locksmith experience preferred. Additionally, a good all-around knowledge of facility maintenance services including electrical, plumbing, appliance servicing, building maintenance, carpentry, and finish work.

High school diploma or GED with strong reading, writing, speaking, and analytical abilities.

National Locksmith Association membership or affiliation with other related professional organization desired.

Ability to prioritize work, maintain quality control standards, and maintain records.

Basic computer skills including proficiency with Word, Access, and Excel. Familiarity with HPC MasterKing, Simple K or similar master keying software is preferred

Experience installing, troubleshooting, and repairing electronic access control systems, electronic door logic controls, and electronic locking devices preferred.

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs., climb ladders up to 20 feet, and work off scaffolding and platform/lifts at various heights.

Valid Texas Driver's License, good driving record, dependable transportation, and must be insurable by university carrier.

Verifiable local references.

Ability to comply with workplace guidelines and attendance requirements.

Ability to work with minimal supervision and make appropriate independent decisions.

Must be available by telephone for on-call duty on a rotating basis.

Successful completion of an employment and criminal background check required.


Equipment Operated

University vehicles such as truck or utility vehicle, tractor, forklift, backhoe, boom-lift, welders, jackhammers, augers and various trade-related power and hand tools.


Work Schedules

Work schedule is primarily from 7:30 am to 4:30pm; Monday Friday; however scheduled hours may change to meet the needs of the facility.
