Director of Facilities

 

Overview

The Director of Facilities reports to the Associate Vice President of University Operations and is responsible for managing the operations and maintenance of campus buildings, grounds, related systems and equipment and all campus utility infrastructure with a focus on sustainability. This position oversees and coordinates the work of all trades (auto, carpentry, custodial, HVAC, electrical, grounds, mechanical, painting, and plumbing) and serves as the primary liaison with the campus community. As a key member of the operations management team, the Director of Facilities is engaged with strategic planning and decisions in accordance with the divisional goals of increasing customer satisfaction, operational efficiency and resiliency. Direct reports to this role include the Maintenance Manager, Plant Engineering Manager, and Custodial Manager. The Facilities Department is a part of St. Edward's University Division of Finance and Administration, which is responsible for creating, developing and preserving the university's physical, financial and human resources. The division fosters the institution's sustainability through innovative leadership that enables effective change. Working collaboratively with the university community, the division supports the institutional mission and strategic priorities by: providing exceptional service; stewarding university resources; enhancing the campus environment; and creating safe and secure conditions for students and employees to do their best work.

 

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily maintenance and operations, as well as long-term planning and outlook for campus buildings and related systems, equipment, and infrastructure
  • Ensure that maintenance and operations work is completed safely, properly, within budget, and in a timely manner
  • Provide leadership and guidance for the managers and supervisors of all trades (auto, carpentry, custodial, HVAC, electrical, grounds, mechanical, painting, and plumbing) on issues related to safety, customer service, performance, staffing, and budget management
  • Collaborate with the Director of Police Operations and Director of Campus Resilience to ensure the continuity of critical systems/infrastructure and compliance with all applicable laws/regulations and all safety/security standards
  • Make recommendations to the Associate Vice President of University Operations for short and long-term changes or updates in buildings, equipment, and/or systems for improved efficiency or operation
  • Utilize engineering principles and experience to predict and plan maintenance and renewal
  • Ensure that building and utility systems plans are accurately updated
  • Respond to customer concerns and follow through to ensure they are adequately addressed
  • Collaborate with other University Operations personnel and campus constituencies to identify problems and develop viable solutions
  • Serve as an integral member of University Operations management team in support of university special events and master/strategic planning initiatives
  • Ensure that the university is in compliance with existing regulatory requirements including: OSHA, DEP, EPA, RRC, NFPA, ADA, TAS, City of Austin, etc; ensuring that appropriate documentation is maintained
  • Encourage and support the professional development of all members of the facilities team; provide timely and constructive feedback to reports and conduct useful employee performance evaluations consistent with the SEU performance development process

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree (Engineering or related degree preferred) from accredited institution
  • Eight or more years of facilities, physical plant, building maintenance, or related management experience is required; higher education experience and a broad background/knowledge of engineering principles, techniques and methods preferred
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and regulations
  • Experience with physical plant and utility operations
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous quality improvement and the use of sustainability practices
  • Competence with word processing, analytical, and database software
  • Possess an established record of progressively responsible positions, demonstrated managerial leadership and proven organizational ability in facilities maintenance and planning.
  • Familiarity with building codes, ADA, Texas Accessibility Standards and permit requirements.
  • Must be insurable with a valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Possess effective verbal and written communication skills; demonstrate effective interpersonal skills with a standard vocabulary common to the engineering and facilities management professions.
  • Must be a self-starter with demonstrated abilities identifying and implementing creative solutions to complex problems while meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Positive leadership qualities, integrity, credibility, and the ability to motivate people
  • Ability to work cooperatively, solve problems, make decisions, and effectively manage personnel and financial resources
  • Ability to make an impact through work as a member of a team and diverse community
