Academic Counselor


St. Edward's University seeks to fill the position of Academic Counselor.  As a member of the Academic Counseling and Exploration team, this position will serve all first year students and offer support as they development in the Holy Cross tradition.  The Academic Counselor will provide a customized, holistic, and proactive academic advising and case-management service that will positively influence the first year student experience.  In addition, student retention, persistence, graduation rates, and post-graduation opportunities will greatly improved via the Academic Counselor's service. This position reports to the Associate Director of Academic Counseling and Exploration.


Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:


Academic Planning

  • Advise first year undergraduate students regarding university and degree requirements and options
  • Assist with major exploration and four year degree planning
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of university degrees, special programs, academic policies and procedures
  • Document each academically pertinent interaction with individual students for the purpose of maintaining a centralized database
  • Complete other advising duties as assigned including tracking retention, keeping advising statistics, and other reporting documents up to date

Academic Strategy

  • Assess gaps in student preparedness and develop tailored plans of pro-active strategies to facilitate success; monitor and evaluate student's effectiveness in applying these strategies and adjust as necessary to meet student's needs
  • Assist with academic skill-building (study skills, learning strategies, test-taking skills, etc.)
  • Work closely with academic support programs to connect students to academic support across campus
  • Develop with students and appropriate academic personnel an individualized course sequencing plan, assisting each student in planning his/her academic path that is consistent with his/her career goals and objectives
  • Promote and support academic progress to encourage students to persist and complete their degrees in a timely manner

Academic Engagement and Goal-Setting

  • Assist students in establishing and achieving educational, personal, and professional goals
  • Assist students in identifying key relationships, experiences and opportunities that will help them achieve their goals
  • Collaborate with Office of Career and Professional Development on first year career initiatives

Other Duties

  • Participate on committees and undertake projects as assigned
  • Teach student success course as needed
  • Analyzes student retention data and takes appropriate action to promote student success including case management of at-risk students




  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred
  • Knowledge and understanding of student academic advisement, development, retention issues, trends and programs
  • Ability to make decisions using professional discretion and independent judgment
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and make efficient use of time
  • Possess a high degree of organization and attention to detail
  • Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and personnel in other offices
  • Behave in a professional manner and work to create a positive working environment
  • Work independently but also appreciates being a valued team member
  • Possess excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to build professional relationships and collaborate across campus
  • Ability to effectively learn new software programs and online databases
  • Show comfort with change in a high paced work environment
  • Show an appreciation of diversity and multi-cultural differences
