Visiting Assistant Professor or Instructor of Writing and Rhetoric
with a Specialization in Journalism and Digital Media
School of Arts and Humanities

St. Edward's University invites applications for a full-time one-year non-tenure-track position as a Visiting Assistant Professor or Instructor of Writing and Rhetoric with a specialization in Journalism and Digital Media. The position will begin in fall 2018, with the possibility of renewal for additional contract years. This position requires teaching undergraduate students in the Journalism and Digital Media minor or concentration and serving as faculty advisor to the student newspaper.

Qualifications

  • PhD or master's degree from an accredited institution in journalism or related field
  • At least five years of demonstrated ability as a journalist with strong digital skills, including social media, video and audio editing, and data visualization
  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in college teaching
  • Experience working with student publications preferred
  • Educational philosophy consistent with a liberal arts emphasis and values orientation
  • Successful completion of an employment and/or criminal history background check required

Responsibilities

  • Nine-month appointment including -time teaching load (4 course sections per year) and -time as student publications advisor
  • Teaching responsibilities including courses in the Journalism and Digital Media minor and concentration within the Writing and Rhetoric major, as well as courses in the university's general education program
  • Advising responsibilities including serving as an academic advisor and as faculty advisor to The Hilltop Views (the weekly newspaper).
  • The faculty advisor is expected to be present during production and story meetings, working directly with student writers and editors.
  • A willingness to supervise student internship experiences
  • Participation in departmental, School of Arts and Humanities and university projects, events, and committee assignments
  • Fulfillment of other required faculty service responsibilities as outlined in the Faculty Manual
