Visiting Assistant Professor of Writing and Rhetoric, Creative Writing

St. Edward's University invites applications for a one-year non-tenure-track position as Visiting Assistant Professor of Writing and Rhetoric for 2018-2019, with the possibility of renewal for additional contract years. This instructor will be responsible for teaching first-year composition and an introductory creative writing workshop required of all writing majors, those in creative writing, professional writing and journalism. The introductory workshop also fulfills a Creativity and Making requirement in the university's general education program. Ideally, this instructor will also be able teach the Playwriting workshop, required for Video Game Development students, and an upper-division workshop in Writing for the Stage and Screen.


Full-time nine-month teaching responsibilities (4 courses per semester). Teaching responsibilities include Introduction to Creative Writing, Playwriting, and Writing for the Stage and Screen. Additional courses could include fiction, special topics workshops, Magazine Writing, and general education Writing and Rhetoric courses.

Responsible for university service including departmental, School of Humanities, and university projects, events, and committee assignments, especially those associated with the creative writing program. Fulfillment of other required faculty responsibilities as outlined in the Faculty Manual.


MFA or PhD in Creative Writing or a related field from an accredited institution. Demonstration of effective teaching in first-year composition courses. Demonstrated ability to teach an introductory workshop course that covers a variety of genres, as well as upper-division workshops in playwriting, screenwriting, or video game writing. Educational philosophy consistent with a liberal arts emphasis and values orientation. Successful completion of an employment and/or criminal history background check required.
