Public Services Specialist
Munday Library

The Munday Library seeks an energetic, creative and dynamic individual to provide customer services to its patrons. This full-time, benefits eligible position (40 hours per week, MO-FR day time hours, occasional weekend and evening hours), serves as the lead worker in Public Services by providing in-person and through chat, as well as circulation services (60%). The position also supervises student workers (15%), and provides support to library administration (25%). of the Library, and the Head of Public Services supervises this position.


  • Serve the St. Edward's community and general public at the Library Information Desk for approximately 20 hours a week.
    • Provide research and information assistance as needed; respond to internal and external customer inquiries about the library and its resources through both in-person interactions and chat service.
    • Provide circulation and technical assistance (check in/out library and media materials, provide directional assistance, reference assistance, and assist users on library computers and equipment, etc.).
    • Participate in stack maintenance, including shelf-reading, floor pick-up, re-shelving, and cleaning on an as-needed basis.
  • Train, schedule and supervise Public Services student workers under the direction of the Head of Public Services; maintain student employee files (applications, training documentation).
  • Provides administrative support.
    • Create, process, and track purchase orders, invoices, travel expense, student worker timesheets, and other financial reporting documents for submission to the University's Business Office.
    • Responsible for maintaining library's inventory of office supplies including toner and paper.
    • Work with a variety of vendors on and off campus to ensure smooth delivery of products and services to the library.
    • Occasionally process incoming mail from the U.S. Post Office.
    • Attend campus-wide emergency preparedness meetings and stay abreast of developments in this area. Maintain disaster manuals and information in area, ensure that all library faculty and staff are aware of, and enforce emergency and disaster procedures.
    • Will collaborate with colleagues on an as-needed basis to provide interlibrary loan, reserves, special collections and other services.
    • Refer complex problems and/or requests to Dean of the Library and/or Head of Public Services.
    • Acquire proficiency with library specific software.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received
Receives supervision and direction from the Dean of the Library (secondary supervisor) and the Head of Public Services (primary supervisor).
Assignments are made orally or in writing.

Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree (minimum).
  • Minimum (3) years of experience in a customer service position, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Strongly customer service oriented.
  • Possess initiative, problem solving skills, time management and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Must be willing to help other staff members during peak periods.
  • Ability to meet physical demands of the position including but not limited to long periods of standing and sitting and frequent bending and squatting, as well as long periods of computer keyboarding and reading a computer screen. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds, and push or pull a fully loaded book truck weighing at least 100 pounds. Must have manual dexterity sufficient to prepare and maintain physical collection appropriately.
  • Ability to comply with workplace guidelines and attendance requirements.
  • Successful candidate must complete an education and/or criminal background check.
  • May work some evenings and/or weekend hours as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Supervisory experience.
  • Administrative Assistant experience.
  • Experience providing academic support.
