Director of Digital Infrastructure

St. Edward's University invites applications for the position of Director of Digital Infrastructure. The director reports to the Vice President for Information Technology and oversees the design, maintenance, operation and security of the university's digital infrastructure. This includes data and telecommunications networks; servers and storage systems; and telephony. He or she works to align investments in digital infrastructure with the university's educational mission and strategic objectives. The Director of Digital Infrastructure is a central member of the Office of Information Technology's leadership team with critical responsibilities that directly affect the university's pursuit of mission.

Essential Functions

  • Oversee the design, maintenance and operation of the university's network, server and telephony infrastructure; promote performance, reliability, security and cost effectiveness.
  • Maintain and enhance relevant technical standards to guide acquisition and deployment.
  • Provide leadership in project management and change management in the context of upgrades, enhancements, extensions and changes to information technology infrastructure.
  • Provide collaborative leadership within the Office of Information Technology for the identification, prioritization and remediation of risk; for the development and implementation of security strategies, policies and procedures; for the development and execution of incident response plans; and for the maintenance and enhancement of business continuity and disaster recovery plans.
  • Negotiate and manage contracts with external providers of information technology products and services. This includes cloud-based software services.
  • Support and facilitate the development of financial models related to routine equipment replacement and maintenance. Lead the prioritization of infrastructure projects. Contribute to the development of multi-year budget projections and analyses.
  • Supervise, mentor and manage the employees of the Office of Digital Infrastructure to promote the achievement of organizational and university goals, and to contribute to employees' professional development.
  • Cultivate an organizational focus on reliability, operational effectiveness, efficiency and the continuous enhancement of user experience.
  • Foster effective communication within the Office of Information Technology and throughout the university to facilitate both longer term planning and immediate problem resolution.
  • Assist in the effort to align the direction and strategies of the Office of Information Technology with the needs, priorities, strategies and mission of the university.


  • Possess at least seven years of experience in complex technical environments; hands on experience with network, server and data storage technologies; broad familiarity with a wide array of network, server and storage technologies; experience with the design of technical infrastructure; familiarity with middleware and infrastructure services; familiarity with identity management and related authentication and authorization systems; solid understanding of issues related to the security of data networks and servers; experience managing complex technical projects; and experience managing important vendor relationships.
  • Possess at least three years of experience managing complex technical environments; experience managing technical staff; and experience managing budgets in a technical setting. Such experience in the higher education arena is helpful.
  • Strong leadership and organization skills; proven ability to manage time and priorities, ability to manage complex projects and tasks with attention to detail; demonstrated ability to effectively lead cross-functional teams.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with colleagues with different areas and levels of technical expertise.
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize disparate information of multiple types from multiple sources; ability to formulate complex strategies based upon this synthesis; ability to implement complex strategies.
  • A bachelor's degree is required; an advanced degree in a relevant field is desirable.
  • Successful completion of an employment and/or criminal background check is required.

About St. Edward's University's Information Technology Environment
The information technology infrastructure at St. Edward's University is diverse and complex. The campus network connects over 40 buildings across 160 acres and supports nearly 12,000 unique devices daily. The network includes approximately 160 layer two and layer three devices in a highly redundant design that enhances availability. The university's digital assets are protected by a multi-tier firewall design. Three internet service providers are utilized to provide the university community with redundant high-speed internet access.
Two on-campus server rooms feature redundant power and battery backup. Nearly 400 virtual servers run on 14 blade servers, with total storage of 70 terabytes. These are backed up onto a redundant disk array and LTO tape library. The Austin campus features a nearly 100% virtualized server environment leveraging VMware's Hypervisor technology, backed by NetApp storage and Cisco UCS blade servers.
Both LDAP and Active Directory are in use, and are managed and updated by a central identity management system. Authentication is handled primarily by CAS for SSO. Shibboleth is utilized for federated identity. The university has partnered with for end user storage, with Canvas for LMS, with Google for Mail/Calendar/Collaboration, and with Ellucian for administrative software systems (Banner).
The university provides 118 technologically enhanced classrooms and offers courses and programs in a variety of formats including hybrid and online.
