Associate Vice President for Development


Overview
The Office of University Advancement seeks to help every member of the university family make a significant impact on the St. Edward's mission through gifts of time, talent and treasure. On June 30, 2017, we celebrated the conclusion of a ten-year, concerted effort to effectively engage alumni, students, families, and friends philanthropically. Key highlights of the "Opening Doors" campaign included: volunteers gave more than 20,000 hours; 14,000 donors provided more than $100.7-million (more than half designated for scholarships); leadership donors set a record with 440 President's Associates (donors giving more than $1,000 in a given year).

As we look to the future, the university embarked on a new Strategic Plan 2022, whereby every St. Edward's student explores transformational pathways to knowledge, experience, understanding and achievement. To help advance this vision, four teams within university advancement development, alumni and parent programs, data and information services, and constituent relations and communications are collaborating to engage and inspire current and next-generation philanthropists.

The associate vice president for development is a senior-level administrative position in the university advancement office. Reporting to the vice president for university advancement, the associate vice president for development has management responsibilities for directors of development charged with development activity for Gift Planning; Schools and Academic Programs; Corporate and Foundation Relations; Annual Giving and Co-Curricular Programs. Additionally, the associate vice president for development will secure major gifts from alumni, parents/families, corporations, friends and foundations. The associate vice president for development will work in close concert with the vice president for university advancement in formulating a comprehensive campaign plan and executing a feasibility study in the first 12-24 months of service.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of managing teams, securing philanthropic support and comprehensive campaign planning and execution. Evidence of direct solicitation experience is required. The associate vice president for development will work closely with all advancement units including: development, alumni and parent programs, data and information services, and constituent relations and communications.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Establish and strengthen relationships with individuals that have the capacity to make current gifts of $25,000 or more in support of university priorities.
  • Work with directors responsible for building and maintaining portfolios of 150-200 major gift prospects ($25,000+) to carry out specific assignments based on the developed priorities of the university as well as the dean of the specific school or program director.
  • Manage a portfolio of 75-100 major, leadership and principal gift prospects.
  • Use a moves management system to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward prospects.
  • Solicit annual gifts when appropriate from prospects under management.
  • Develop prospect strategies, prepare briefing reports and coordinate execution of donor activities for key university administrators and volunteer leaders.
  • Conduct upwards of 80-100 visits annually.
  • Attend events related to major and gift planning work, including signature events hosted by the division, such as
  • Homecoming/Family Weekend and Presidential Receptions.
  • Serve as a member of the vice president's senior staff.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned by the vice president.

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • A minimum of seven years of staff management and fundraising field work which includes responsibilities for building relationships with individuals, foundations and corporations; fundraising experience in the higher education sector preferred.
  • Familiarity with complex organizations.
  • Enthusiasm for direct, on-going personal interaction with major donors and prospects required.
  • Proven track record of soliciting gifts.
  • Understanding and appreciation for private higher education, especially Catholic higher education.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office and fundraising software systems.
  • Willingness to travel regularly on behalf of St. Edward's University.
  • Ability to participate in a collaborative environment and facilitate relationships with all areas of the University community.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative in planning, organizing, and effectively presenting ideas and concepts.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and problem solve quickly.
  • Ability to work independently and on a team.
  • Successful candidate must complete an employment and/or criminal history background check.
